The Shape of Loss

Through “Shape of Loss”, Noguchi creates a visual representation of the physical magnitude of the fishing boat loss. Her work, initiated during Nuit Blanche 2025, was a collaboration of artists, including Noguchi, to produce life-sized line drawings of the 1,137 Nikkei fishing boats (hull only) as recorded in Kishizo Kimura’s catalogue. The hulls measure from 25 feet to 68 feet in length. As the hulls were drawn, many descendants of boat owners read aloud the owner’s name and boat information. A time-lapse recording of this performance artwork accompanies the exhibit. Boat details as captured in Kishizo Kimura’s catalogue are also presented in handwritten text by Noguchi.
